"For the first eight years of our marriage, [Michelle and I] were paying more in student loans than what we were paying for our mortgage. So we know what this is about. And we were lucky to land good jobs with a steady income. But we only finished paying off our student loans—check this out, all right, I’m the President of the United States—we only finished paying off our student loans about eight years ago."

I graduated from medical school in 2002. As of today, I am $202, 012.79 in debt. I pay about $840 a month. I will pay this for the next 29 and a half years and will therefore be 65 when I pay off my medical school loans. I am fortunate that my parents paid for my undergraduate education at Washington University in St. Louis.

"If you don’t get what you want, you suffer; if you get what you don’t want, you suffer; even when you get exactly what you want, you still suffer because you can’t hold on to it forever. Your mind is your predicament. It wants to be free of change. Free of pain, free of the obligations of life and death. But change is law and no amount of pretending will alter that reality."

I’ve decided that this time, I’m not going to get a card.  3/4 of the reason why is because I just couldn’t be another person standing in line with a Valentine’s Day card.  Besides, I need to use the words that float around in my head so this is the perfect opportunity for that.

I don’t believe in this Holiday (I know it’s not a real Holiday).  But, there was so much love and stress intertwined today at work that I realized my one positive thought was that I was going to have a lovely evening tonight with someone that loves me for being me.  This thought then irritated me, and then I realized that the internal and eternal feminist is still raging inside, sometimes stronger than ever.  However, When I look at last year’s Valentine’s Day and I look at today’s, there’s obviously a poignant difference-I get to spend this year with someone who has somehow managed to calm the distress from within.  Also (sidenote)-I don’t even remember last year’s.

So if Valentine’s Day is to show someone you love them, then let me take a moment to show my love through thanks.  I am grateful for your presence in my life, and have no idea how yours collided with mine.  I wonder about how often we might have been within meters of each other in Victoria, and why it is only now that we’ve met.  People believe in fate and that every moment has a meaning.  So I’ll believe in our meeting and that my life was meant to change.  For the better.  I’m grateful for the stillness you bring, even though I know inside you’re not so calm!  Thank you for always listening, for not really judging, and for looking at life from every possible angle because we all know I just look straight ahead.  This year is full of question marks, but I feel better facing all of them with you in my life.

Happy Kiva.
